On the Gandhi
Jayanti Day in 1986, Indira Gandhi Government College, the third largest
College of the State, came into existence in Tezu, a picturesque
town, Head Quarters of Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh.
The College caters to the higher educational needs of six
districts of the eastern part of the State.
Initially
started in a corner of the building of the District Industries Centre
(DIC) with 42 students and eight faculty members in five departments, the
College was later shifted to an abandoned building of Navodaya
Vidyalaya and finally to the present permanent site of 210 acres in
1995. Over the years the College experienced significant
expansion both in terms of quality and quantity. The Commerce
stream was introduced in 2004 and efforts are on for the introduction of
Science stream. The strength of students during the Academic Session
(2009-10) is 1,501 with 27 Faculty Members. The Department of Education is
newly introduced during the Session 2007-08.
The College has 17
Class Rooms, a Computer Centre, Laboratory for Geography Department,
Library with 15,000 books, Play Ground, sufficient Sports Equipment, Two
Buses, Gypsy, Generator Set, Fax Machine, Xerox Machine, 34
Computers, Audio-visual Equipment, Staff Quarters, Boys and Girls Hostels,
Post office, NCC, NSS, IGNOU Study Centre, Distance Education Centre (Rajiv
Gandhi University), EDUSAT (ROT) Facility, Students Recreation Room,
Canteen etc.. Students of this College are provided with
Travel Concession and Educational Excursion. The College provides an
excellent opportunity to the students to share their literary talents
through the in-house Magazine
"Horizon" and Wall Magazine "Symphony". A number of
Committees and Cells are functioning in the College for its all-round
development. As an encouragement to merit, H.E. the Governor’s Award and Hon’ble MLA Shri Karikho Kri’s
Awards are given to the meritorious students and students who
secure highest attendance in every year. The College bags positions
in University Exams., and prizes in Inter-College Competitions.
The College is
affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University (a Central University), Itanagar
(formerly Arunachal University). The College has duly been
recognized by the University Grants Commission under the UGC Act,
Section 2(f),12(B) w.e.f. 25-07-1995 and is accredited by NAAC with
B+ Grade.
